Back To The Basics:Groundings With My Ancestors

Enslaved Afrikans, before they were psychologically manipulated, were not actually seeking to integrate or assimilate into anything. They simply wanted to be liberated from bondage, to go home and to regain the right to be themselves. It was the Eurocentric system that taught us that the diasporic locales to which we were forcibly carried WERE “home”, that legal liberation by those who enslaved us was “freedom,” and that being ourselves was becoming like them I never drank that Kool-Aid. I know I have advantages my ancestors did not have, but what is important is that their prayers and efforts towards me having them, in this day and time, was to complete the work towards liberation and self-determination that they longed for all of us, not for systemic accommodation.
